Lil Yachty

My first time understanding what a Lil Yachty was had to be the “Minnesota” video. I saw Black men dressed like hockey players. There were two men struggling for a few seconds, but it’s significance wasn’t registered in my mind.

Women were seen licking red, white, and blue ice sickles, but, yet, again I couldn’t grasp what Lil Yachty was saying.

The ice statue, at the end of the video led me to no clue. This was my first reaction.

Now, jump to the present. I found myself listening to the album, Let’s Start Here (2023) and was floored. I mean, the first song, “Black Seminole” was dope. The track was like a Pink Floyed album (Dark Side of the Moon). Yachty was very poetic and his band was off the chain. It’s been a while since a Black man came out with a decent rock (psychedelic) album. Maybe Prince or Fishbone. You name it - I have never witnessed a rapper tackle an album such as this one.

You see, after watching “Minnesota” I (with glee) went down the rabbit hole and found “Minnesota” was on the Lil Boat album or mixtape (2016). This was the project that got Yachty a deal with Motown, Capitol Records, and Quality Control Music.

There were a lot of Lil Boats on Yachty’s discography, but Lil Boat 2 (2018) was also the bomb. The singles “Mickey” and “66” were, also, dope. Yachty did “66” with Trippie Redd. A very good album, but back to “Minnesota”.

Well, it seems people had to get off the street if they couldn’t take the heat - meaning African Americans come from warmer climates. They give a middle finger to 12 - meaning Adam 12 (an old TV show). But them women sucking ice sickles, usually, date (well) Black men, not the “Snow King”. That fight on the ice between two hockey players were really one Black man spilling the blood of a White dude. We, as Black men, were playing on the “Snow King’s” turf and kicking ass.

A deep video - very deep, but striking Lil Yachty’s ice statue said it all. On the White man’s turf, you can turn to ice. Yachty cracked the fxxk out of that statue, signifying Yachty’s break from the White man’s “ice” world. African Americans could melt that “ice” world down.

Regardless, there was one more video with lots of meaning - “Solo Steppin Crete Boy”.

In this video a caller (over the phone) asked Lil Yachty to drop the freestyle, and Yachty agreed to drop some form of mixtape single - you can’t find on any album or known mixtape.

Regardless, we see two sides to one story. 1) Yachty is seen wrapped in an American flag, freezing (apparently) while in the back seat of a moving convertible. He’s cold, I guess.

   2) Yachty is seen resting on a red Mercedes - Benz in front of East Asian (golden) statues (apparently) in warm weather. Yachty is, then, seen giving the camera a middle finger.

So, I’ll provide you with two audio tracks: “Mickey”, and “Black Seminole”. Then I’ll provide you with videos: “Minnesota”, “Solo Steppin Crete Boy”, and last “66”. I hope you enjoy!
